The submental island flap in lingual cancer reconstruction

چکیده
Purpose: Large defects resulting from surgical excision of oral cancer require various kinds of flap to reconstruct the defect. Therefore the aim of this study is to assess the application potentials of submental island flap in lingual cancer. Methods: Over the 3 years, submental island flap has been studied in a 13 cases of lingual cancer patients and follow-up was accordingly done. The sites, stage of tumor, pattern of neck dissection, technique of flap transfer as well as postoperative complications were recorded. Results: The submental island flap was used for reconstruction after lingual cancer ablation in 13 patients in our department (9 men and 4 women) from 2013 to 2015. The average age of the patients was 50.8 years (range 37 to 69 years). The follow-up period ranged from 5 to 24 months. Size of the skin paddle ranged for 5.5×4 cm to 8×4 cm. There were no cases of marginal mandible nerve palsy. In all cases, good skin color and texture match were achieved. Not any debulking of flap was found in patients. The donor site recovered well without any scar remaining and any restriction of neck movement. Conclusions: The submental island flap is an excellent alternative for reconstruction of lingual cancer defect due to its reliability, versatility, and relative ease of application. More studies will be performed to follow-up the longterm observation of the patients.

Submental Artery Island Flap in Reconstruction of Harde Plate after wide Surgical Resection of Veruccous Carcinoma. Two case reports
Introduction: Reconstruction of intraoral soft tissue defects is important in restoring function and esthetic. In large defects, there will be demand for regional pedicle flaps or free flaps. Hard palate separates nasal and oral cavities. Due to the small surface area between flap and remaining palate after surgical resections, optimal blood supply of the flaps for hard palate reconstructions ...

Introduction: Mandibular continuity defects after pathologic resections or traumatic events are difficult cases for reconstruction. Defects involving both hard and soft tissue loss are more challenging, because of problems in soft tissue coverage. The role of the submental flap in this regard is presented. Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study from the archived files of Ghaem Hospi...

BACKGROUND In Canada, 4,400 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed yearly. Surgical resection is a key component of treatment in many of these cancers. Reconstruction of defects, with the goal of preserving function, is of utmost importance. Several choices are possible for reconstruction of larger defects, including both free and pedicled flaps. Free flap reconstruction is reliable and effective, ...

The authors describe their experience with the submental island flap for the primary correction of head and neck deformities following oncologic surgery, over the past 5 years. The use of this flap is reported in 12 patients, with a mean age of 67 years, requiring facial or intraoral reconstruction. A brief review of the key points and some refinements in the operative technique are discussed. ...

Objective To explore the feasibility of the submental island flap in the repair of hypopharyngeal defects. Methods We collected wet specimens of fresh cadaveric heads from the Han Chinese adult population for applied anatomy of the submental island flap, and followed five patients with pyriform sinus carcinoma after reconstruction surgery using submental island flaps. Results We found that ...
